A recent website trivia question asked which of the following Rangers had a dream start by scoring on their debut with the club: Former striker Malvern Ntini, midfielder Aaron Radigan, winger Ron Burden, or strikingly handsome wordsmith/manager/midfielder/occasional goalkeeper Sean Ingersoll?
The answer may surprise you...or not. I don't make value judgements.
Ntini scored within 55 seconds of his introduction in the second half of a 2-2 draw against NE Portland Chiropractic at Delta Field in June of 2007. Radigan netted on a cold, wet day earlier that same season on April 19th after just 20 minutes, helping 'Gers to win their season opener (in the Blue Monk Derby, no less!) for the first time in almost forever. Burden found the net against Symmetry Northwest on May 16th, 2007 with a deft rebound for another 2-2 tie. Funny story about Burden--he had called after the season started looking for a team, but Sean believed at the time that he had a full roster, so he told him there wasn't room on the team. A rash of last-minute absences before the Symmetry match encouraged Sean to call him back and ask if he still wanted to play which, fortunately, he did.
Sean Ingersoll, alas, did not find the net his first match...nor the second match...nor his entire first season. Ingersoll didn't score until May 26, 2006 at Hillsboro Stadium in an 8-0 romp over eight man Code Blue and the goal was so unremarkable that I literally passed it into an empty goal.
So the correct trivia answer was, "All of the above except for Sean Ingersoll because he sucks in front of net."
So now you know. And knowing is half the battle!
Match summary from Rangers-FC Hut Old Boys to follow in the next day or two.
